One of the pieces of information that I was misinformed about is the fact that the immunization records of students falls under FERPA and not HIPPA. I always assumed that because immunization is a health issue that it would be considered health information and fall under protection of HIPPA. The issue of immunizations has become front and center in the last year or so and has created a lot of controversy as to whether it or not it is safe for children and worth of the risk of something happening to them. This is something that teachers need to be educated on since it has been in the news so much and parents (and students by default) tend to have strong opinions one way or the other on the issue.

Yes, it is interesting that immunization falls under FERPA instead of HIPPA. Immunization is a "hot topic" right now. Schools need to be sure to correctly and confidential access these records during this high immunization time.
