Spreadsheet: This is one of the questions that was asked to the students from the survey back in 17.3. I did a sum formula to calculate how many students took part in the survey and then created a pie chart to show the percentage of students that felt bullying was a problem at our middle school.

The graph and formulas that I did is for our schools data over the last five years for 7th grade reading at our school. I create a column graph comparing the ELl and non-ELL students and also found the average percentage proficient, and the high and low percentages using a formula.
Questions to address the gap in reading for ELL vs. Non-ELL students at Strong Middle School:
1. How often do you read outside of school? 2. Do you feel like you have to read a lot during the school day? 3. What kind of reading strategies have you learned to help you figure something out if you have a question while you're reading? I asked a group of 6th grade students five questions about our school.
1. How much of a problem is bullying in our school? 2. Do you have enough social time throughout the day? 3. Is 4 minutes enough time in between classes to use the bathroom and get to class? 4. Do you have enough time to eat your food during the lunch period? 5. Do you feel safe and comfortable in the cafeteria during lunch? Since this is opinion based there are no right or wrong answers but the results are below. I chose to look at the area of reading for our 7th grade students and compare the ELL students to the non ELL students. The non ELL students have remained pretty steady over the last three years while the ELL students have decreased over the last three years. Even though there has been a decrease in the reading scores for our ELL students over the last three years, we are still pretty even with where the state average falls. This last year however our non ELL students were over 10 points below the state average.
One of the pieces of information that I was misinformed about is the fact that the immunization records of students falls under FERPA and not HIPPA. I always assumed that because immunization is a health issue that it would be considered health information and fall under protection of HIPPA. The issue of immunizations has become front and center in the last year or so and has created a lot of controversy as to whether it or not it is safe for children and worth of the risk of something happening to them. This is something that teachers need to be educated on since it has been in the news so much and parents (and students by default) tend to have strong opinions one way or the other on the issue.
I tried out VozMe and was not very impressed with the quality. However, it is a simple, almost impossible to mess up and I think the students would enjoy getting to hear their text spoken even if it does sound very robotic and cut up!
I explored the "multiple means of engagement" section of the website. They have some great resources on that page that I think my students would really enjoy using! I think my students would really enjoy getting to record their voice for presentations. One of the programs that I have not used with them before that I think they'd be interested in is Photo Story. They usually really like working with photos/images and it keeps their attention.
In the article I think one thing I could definitely utilize more with the students would be graphic organizer. Word has so many good choices in the SmartArt category that using that on a regular basis to organize data and the thoughts of the students could be very beneficial!
It is amazing how many things you already do in your classrooms that you don't realize are differentiating the instruction for the students! And also how many more you could be doing that would be very easy to incorporate.
